Bad Boys 4 Release Date Confirmed, Will Smith & Martin Lawrence Return In 2024

Sony has formally announced the release date for Bad Boys 4 while postponing the majority of their planned lineup. Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, two quick-witted Miami detectives, will once again be played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as the franchise’s leaders in buddy cop. A star-studded cast of both fresh and recognizable faces will join the duo, including Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Nez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, and Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul.
While the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are still ongoing, Sony has made a significant change to their release schedule, delaying and shifting seven high-profile films. Despite these modifications, the studio has moved forward with deciding on June 14, 2024, just in time for Father’s Day weekend, as the date for the release of Bad Boys 4. The film will now compete with Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 because of the revised release date.
Will Bad Boys 4 Recapture For Life’s Success?
Given the massive success of Bad Boys for Life upon its release in 2020, which brought in over $426 million against its $90 million production budget and became the first to receive favorable reviews from critics, the news of the creation of Bad Boys 4 was not shocking at the time. The following announcements of the return of the directorial team Adil & Bilall and writer Chris Bremner gave hope that it would have some measure of the same success as the 2020 sequel.
Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars did pose a challenge to the production of Bad Boys 4, and some suggestions that it had been shelved were later refuted by Sony chief Tom Rothman. In the end, it did take until this past January for Bad Boys 4 to be officially announced in a video with Smith and Freeman and for filming to start in April.
It will be fascinating to see if Sony can get the sequel made despite Smith’s scandal and match the popularity of Bad Boys for Life, even though Sony may be pushing forward with the sequel, making it one of the few confirmed releases while delaying a lot of others. A favorable critical reception would go a long way toward ensuring this continued success, but given the franchise’s devoted following, which has persisted despite the unfavorable reviews of the first two films, it will ultimately depend on whether there is potential for continued interest in Mike and Marcus’s adventures.
