7 top new movies to watch on Netflix, Hulu, Paramount Plus and more this week (July 25-31)

There are seven great movies that are premiering this week that you can watch at home despite Barbie and Oppenheimer having all the oxygen. The Little Mermaid, Disney’s most recent live-action remake, is the most well-known of them all.

We also have a ton of fantastic alternatives for anyone who doesn’t need to see a talking CGI crab. The irreverent comedy I chose for this week’s personal favorite feels like The Hangover, which just left the theaters.

The Beanie Bubble, the most recent film on a product, is available on Apple TV Plus. This movie features a powerful main duo in Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks, continuing the current trend set by films like Tetris, Air, Blackberry, and Flamin’ Hot.

In addition to those films, we also have a high-budget action film, a personal drama, and a ridiculous comedy that you simply must watch to believe.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (Paramount Plus)

The honorable Autobots and the vicious Decepticons might be the only factions you are familiar with if you have just watched the movies or the original cartoons about Transformers. But the Maximals and Terrorcons are also real, as any child of the 1990s would attest. And this sort of prequel, which occurs after Bumblebee in the series and before Transformers (2007), is all about introducing these two groups.

The Optimus Primal of the Maximals, whose name is still too cheesily similar to that of the general of the Autobots, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), is a force for good. He is voiced by Ron Perlman. Additionally, in order to defeat their evil counterparts as well as the planet-eating enemy Unicron, the Autobots and Maximals must cooperate.

Do you think that’s too much lore? What if I told you that John DiMaggio, a renowned voice actor best known for his work on Futurama and Adventure Time, as well as Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Pete Davidson, and Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso’s Dani Rojas), all provide their voices to this Transformers film?

Stream it right now on Paramount Plus (it just debuted on Tuesday, July 25).

The Little Mermaid (Digital)

Ariel the mermaid (Halle Bailey) only wants to be a human and, like any young child, lets a crush lead her astray. All due to the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), who strikes a deal to allow her to walk on land with actual legs.

Despite the fact that this live-action adaptation is one of the least necessary Disney films produced to date and that its creatures are not even close to the animation films’ adorable animals, it has received positive reviews. Particularly Bailey brings life to the classic adventure, while McCarthy also received enthusiastic praise.

Immediately purchase digital copies at Amazon and other stores (available as of today, July 25)

My Happy Ending Tuesday (Hulu)

Even though Julia (Andie MacDowell) is a successful famous performer, she learns that there is no special therapy for cancer. Fortunately, she befriends three of the other patients, who support her in controlling her discomfort.

Even the possibility of a romance is hinted at in My Happy Ending as Julia perseveres. While there are a variety of reviews, most believe that MacDowell should be praised for her portrayal.

Watch right now on Hulu. (published on June 24th, Monday)

Smoking Causes Coughing (Hulu)

And now for the genuinely insane. Smoking Effects A bunch of “heroes” known as The Tobacco Force are the subject of the farcical Power Rangers-inspired film Coughing. Even before they beat a big turtle with bursts of what appears to be cigarette smoke, you can tell something seriously screwy is going on with names like Nicotine (Anase Demoustier) and Methanol (Vincent Lacoste).

However, as you can see from the trailer above and the peculiar rat-person that guides them, this is undoubtedly not for everyone. Smoking Causes Coughing, praised for its brilliantly insane comedy, is perhaps one of the best films of the year that no one has seen.

Watch right now on Hulu. (published on June 24th, Monday)

Happiness For Beginners (Netflix)

Ellie Kemper, who has previously appeared in The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, plays the risk-averse Helen in this week’s top Netflix film. Unfortunately, she is just divorced and unsure of where her life will lead when we first meet her. She decides to defy her own expectations and sign up for a weird group of strangers’ Appalachian Trail trip.

Reviews haven’t been out yet, but based on the trailer, this one should appease everyone who was anticipating a story about personal development with a splash of romance.

Start watching on Netflix on Thursday, July 27.

The Beanie Bubble (Apple TV Plus)

You might not immediately think of Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis), the CEO of Ty Inc. But if you’re older than a certain age, you undoubtedly recall the craziness he caused with the Beanie Baby craze. In The Beanie Bubble, however, it is suggested that Warner wasn’t alone and that fictionalized versions of the women in his life were also present, including his collaborator Robbie (Elizabeth Banks).

At the very least, The Beanie Bubble appears to be superior to the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos movie, which flopped at the box office, as one of the best films explaining a product’s history. Co-starring are Geraldine Viswanathan from Blockers and Sarah Snook from Succession.

Start watching on Apple TV Plus on Friday, July 28.

Joy Ride (Digital)

The most recent movie from Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker Adele Lim is reportedly being hurried into its digital distribution just 21 days after its theatrical debut. Which is a shame because yours truly enjoyed this film, which has been compared to a female-led Hangover.

As Chinese-American friends Ashley and Lolo, played by Ashley Park (Emily in Paris, Beef) and Sherry Cola (Good Trouble, Claws), respectively, they travel on a road trip that swiftly goes awry. Joy Ride is a novel about female friendship, lineage, and family that sort of cloaks those themes in a veneer of raunch and adventure.

Starting on Friday, July 28, purchase digitally at Amazon and other stores.
