How ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Sets Up a Season 3

Jump scares, it turns out, may happen in even the most innocent circumstances, like leaving your final examinations in college. They aren’t only limited to horror and thriller movies. Conrad’s (Christopher Briney) reaction to seeing his younger brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), and Belly (Lola Tung), kissing outside of his final exam will live in our memories forever. It was actually difficult to hold back screaming in the final five seconds of Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. And that’s not even addressing how it will undoubtedly affect how their next summer together at Cousins Beach plays out in general. If the group even agrees to remain together after what has happened, that is.

We’re dealing with the whole enchilada right here, so the dynamic is definitely about to be thrown off its axis after what happened with our favorite love triangle in the finale. If even one, tiny thing is off within the group of Conrad, Jeremiah, Belly, and Steven (Sean Kaufman), it starts an immediate ripple effect that trickles its way throughout every single person.

Will This Love Triangle Ever Die?

It’s safe to assume that, no, this love triangle isn’t likely to end any time soon given the way things have been developing for two entire seasons. Belly, who is likely never going to be able to decide who she eventually wants to be with, is at the center of the whole affair, which feeds off itself in some sort of sick and twisted loop. Even though she is only 16, she is handling the scenario as though she is choosing her real future husband.

However, Belly is the one driving the entire cycle because she is in a constant back-and-forth; in other words, this is a classic Goldilocks scenario, regardless of what her true intentions may be. Jeremiah was too upbeat, while Conrad was too melancholy. Jeremiah was at the top of the list because Belly was so taken by Conrad’s beauty that she failed to notice how hot he was. Conrad suddenly reverted to his earlier, sweeter demeanor, giving him just enough oomph to appear over the top in Belly’s eyes. Conrad had always been her top priority, despite the fact that Jeremiah had recently caused her to doubt her emotions. Of course, this was true throughout the entire ordeal. Belly really couldn’t decide, but when she was eventually offered the chance to fulfill her childhood fantasy with Conrad, she seized the chance.

Let’s assume that Belly does choose Jeremiah at the start of Season 3: if Conrad reacts negatively (and given that it appeared as though he was planning to confess that he still had feelings for Belly, it’s likely to be a negative reaction), Belly will doubt whether or not she was correct in her choice. In addition, if it doesn’t entirely cause Belly to second-guess her choice, it will undoubtedly maintain her unresolved feelings for Conrad in the background because it may be difficult to break free from being attracted to someone else’s affections for you.

A Rocky Summer Waits Ahead

Because of the crew’s recent (successful) engagement with Conrad and Jeremiah’s aunt. Conrad’s final exam was the only obstacle standing in the way of their first summer at Cousins Beach without their mother, Susannah (Rachel Blanchard), and Julia (Kyra Sedgwick). Conrad probably thought he was finally free of Brown University as he left for his exam, able to (maybe) transfer to Stanford University in the fall, with the entire summer ahead of him to unwind and perhaps renew his romance with Belly. Nothing can derail your summer plans like discovering that your brother is having an affair with your ex, and this incident probably tops the list.

Conrad should respond to this incident in some way at this point since it would be stunning if he didn’t, but only time will tell how nuclear his explosion will be. Technically, he could just brush it off and say that he was alright with Belly and Jeremiah being together; after all, Conrad’s approach of dealing with uncomfortable or distressing circumstances is to be sullen and quiet. In any case, it seems unlikely that Conrad will spend the entire summer staying away from the beach house due to the interaction between Belly and Jeremiah. Everyone has been going through a difficult period since Susannah passed away, so missing the meeting at Cousins would feel almost improper at this point.

Since Laurel (Jackie Chung) is likely in charge of keeping an eye on all the kids at the beach house, she’ll want to ensure that their first summer there without Susannah is a success. Therefore, maybe having her around could help the youngsters calm down if things get out of hand. The beach house was also extended an open invitation to Julia and her child Skye (Elsie Fisher), so things could get a little crowded there. This is all before even mentioning Taylor (Rain Spencer) and Cameron (David Iacono), who will undoubtedly be joining everyone at some point. A full house indicates the possibility of greater conflict, but it also denotes coziness and warmth, which perhaps more accurately reflect how things turn out for the group by the end of Season 3.

It will be wonderful to (hopefully) get back on track with the current for Season 3 and begin things with the time that Conrad encountered Belly and Jeremiah after his exam because Season 2 was a bit of a difficult mash-up of the past and present. While Belly’s response will ultimately determine how smoothly or badly their summer at Cousins will go, Belly’s initial answer might set the tone for how the season begins.
