Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One has begun its North American box office run with a franchise-high $7 million in Tuesday previews. Mission: Impossible — Fallout, the most recent film in the series, made $6 million in preview sales.
Optimism is high. The Paramount and Skydance tentpole Dead Reckoning, Part One is projected to debut to a franchise-best $90 million or more in North America alone, reversing a summer box office dip. The movie opens midweek to gain a head start on the competition and has a good chance of earning a franchise-best opening.
Christopher McQuarrie directed the movie Dead Reckoning. Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson are other cast members.
The proprietors of theaters adore Cruise. Top Gun: Maverick from 2022, which he resisted placing on streaming and which ended up earning $774.7 million domestically and $1.49 billion globally, was the year’s highest-grossing domestic movie release.
The actor has essentially evolved into a movie ambassador. He recently asked his followers to support all summer movies, including Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, both of which debut in theaters on July 21.
The latest Mission: Impossible film had to contend with numerous COVID-19-related obstacles. Filming was halted at least five times because of the pandemic, and Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie both fell ill as a result. Audio of Cruise telling the cast to follow COVID guidelines went viral.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted Cruise as saying it was “amazing” to overcome such obstacles and debut the tentpole on the big screen earlier this week. “We discussed it. We fantasized about it. At the film’s New York City premiere, Cruise remarked, “It’s very, very wonderful. “On Top Gun: Maverick, they kept hammering home the film’s message, and for [McQuarrie] and I, this is such an ambitious film. And after everything that happened, the production of the film became even more difficult. Therefore, receiving this response is extraordinarily special.
More will follow.
