According to a recent report from Variety, Adult Swim has ordered a new anime series for Toonami from studio Mappa, the well-known animation studio behind Chainsaw Man and the final seasons of the wildly popular anime series Attack on Titan, and Shinichir Watanabe, the legendary director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
Lazarus is the name of the upcoming anime series. The anime, which is already in production, is set in the year 2052 and centers on a “Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist” who develops the all-purpose medication Hapauna. A special task force was formed to look into the situation because the medicine has severe adverse effects that cause consumers to pass away three years after using it. At the Adult Swim Festival at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday, Watanabe is expected to talk more about his next anime.
In a press statement, Watanabe stated, “As I begin this creative journey, I can’t help but feel that this project will serve as a conclusion of my career thus far. “I really hope you enjoy it.”
Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, is also involved in the production and choreographs the action scenes. Along with jazz DJ Bonobo and British electronic music DJ Floating Points, saxophonist Kamasi Washington will contribute songs to and produce the soundtrack for the film.
Lazarus is basically building up to be a jazzy AF anime from one of the best creative brains in anime, with a renowned animation studio and a stand-out action-movie director also at the helm, which fucks.
Shinichiro Watanabe is unquestionably among the greatest living artists, and working with him on a new original series is a dream come true, according to Jason DeMarco, co-creator of Toonami, who spoke to Variety. “Lazarus is full of great ideas, amazing characters, and a ton of heart, much like all of his work. We eagerly await the arrival of anime aficionados in this world.
Lazarus does not have a release date.
