Even though they were created ten, twenty, or more years ago, certain anime relationships are so masterfully constructed that they endure the test of time. Other, more recent romantic storylines are so well-written and novel that readers fall in love with the protagonists’ journeys right away. An effective romantic portrayal involves many different factors.
The interaction between the two characters that brings them together must be memorable; examples include competitors or foes who fall in love despite themselves, a shared past, shared objectives, complementary personality qualities, and a similar outlook on the future. Despite the bumps in the path, their love story is equally as compellingly written as any exterior crisis in the story.
Sariphi & Leonhart (Sacrificial Princess & The King Of Beasts)
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts may be filled with obvious fan service moments like wistful glances, spontaneous bridal carry, blushing cheeks, and dramatic vows, but that doesn’t mean the author isn’t conscious of the tropes it so heavily relies on. Sariphi immediately captures Leonhart’s interest when they first meet.
Fortunately, Sariphi’s bothersome propensity to frequently overlook her own life doesn’t overshadow her other admirable qualities. She spends time getting to know everyone in her immediate vicinity, including the Holy Beast and her new kingly consort. Similar to Leonhart, there is a lot more to him than first appears. They are two remarkably complex individuals who complement one another wonderfully.
Striga & Morana (Castlevania)
It’s crucial to depict relationships that have progressed past the wooing stage, and by the time Morana and Striga are introduced to the audience in Castlevania, their union has been going strong for many years. Their relationship is complex and close-knit. Their ultimate devotion is to one another, regardless of who they choose to align themselves with.
Striga and Morana complement each other’s advantages. Striga is a protector and an honorable person, whereas Morana is prudent and sensible. Their bond has endured the test of time, a war, and shifting allegiances, and it will do so for the remainder of their long lives as they embark on new adventures.
Haruhi & Tamaki (Ouran High School Host Club)
Ouran High School Host Club is a ridiculous romance that (lovingly) parodies shojo clichés, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a satisfying love story. Tamaki has a charming defect. On the surface, he appears to take little seriously and prefer to engage in pure silliness.
But Tamaki never misses the mark when it matters. He not only prioritizes Haruhi’s safety, as all of her friends ought do, but he also frequently reaches out to her in an effort to lift her mood. The two are a good match because Haruhi has gone through a lot and she brings out Tamaki’s generous side.
Meier Link & Charlotte (Vampire Hunter D)
Some well-written couples, as Meier Link and Charlotte in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, don’t even need that many scenes together to win the hearts of the viewers. They are in many respects a traditional story of a deadly vampire falling in love with a vulnerable human.
Meier Link is an interesting figure because of Charlotte. Without his wonderful Charlotte, neither his strength nor even his high aesthetic would be sufficient to distinguish him. Charlotte embraces his beating heart even though his blood may have turned cold ages ago. Although being together requires sacrifice, these two go through a lot just to be together. Their sincere and realistic star-crossed romance.
Yona & Hak (Yona Of The Dawn)
From an almost-kiss that develops into an unpleasant headbutt to the famed moment when Hak pours honey on Yona’s hands, Yona of the Dawn creates fantastic romantic tension. Yona and Hak alternately resist their increasing affections for one another, but it never gets boring or routine.
Their misunderstandings and banter provide for great laughs and heel-kicking, but their real-life decisions are where their romance truly shines. Hak may put on a show of self-interest, but it is only a thin veneer. He doesn’t think twice about putting himself in danger to protect Yona. Yona may vehemently reject her emotions, but that is only because she is overcome by the way her life has been turned upside down. Yona’s development as a warrior and leader leads to a strengthening of their bond.
Kenshin & Kaoru (Rurouni Kenshin)
Rurouni Kenshin’s Kenshin and Kaoru are a stunning couple, but they have more going for them than simply their sophisticated looks. More than emotion and great gestures define good partnerships. The way a couple interacts with one another, listens to one another, and supports one another during small moments defines them. The main romance in Rurouni follows the traditional friends-to-lovers storyline.
That is not to mean that Kenshin and Kaoru don’t experience significant events as well. When Kaoru realizes that Kenshin has returned his sight and exclaims, “I’m happy to see her face,” it is a wonderful scenario that will make you cry.
Yuri & Victor (Yuri On Ice)
Because Yuri and Victor’s relationship in Yuri!!! On Ice begins between a mentor and the skater who idolizes him, it may appear unbalanced. However, they have a deeply sincere connection in which they may both benefit from one another.
When Yuri dedicates his skating routine to Victor and Victor makes a quiet, appreciative whistle, it is one of their cuter, flirtier moments. When Yuri is too hesitant to express his thoughts, Victor does so instead, pledging to be the best boyfriend he can be. Their bond is sincere, cordial, and mutually beneficial.
Usagi & Mamoru (Sailor Moon Crystal)
Sailor Moon Crystal shows a clear, convincing development in Mamoru and Usagi’s relationship. Even though they were naturally drawn to one another from the beginning, their relationship feels natural whether or not their memories are released. In other words, they were destined to be.
Compared to the original series from the 1990s, Usagi and Mamoru are considerably more equal in the new reboot. The Crystal version of the couple demonstrates that a romance can be compelling without hostility and continual arguing. Like the previous Mamoru, this Mamoru would never abruptly split up with Usagi.
Takeo & Yamato (My Love Story!!)
Many people at his school fail to recognize Takeo for the gem that he truly is in My Love Story! He was wise to exercise patience, though, as Yamato falls madly in love with him right away. Takeo makes absolutely certain that Yamato is aware of his feelings for her once he is three times convinced that she harbors them.
After overcoming a little misunderstanding, Yamato and Takeo are a happy couple who date happily. Yamato appreciates everything about Takeo and considers him to be the epitome of a gentlemanly boyfriend.
San & Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke)
From the subtle and understated to the extravagant, Studio Ghibli creates some of the best love stories. The reason Princess Mononoke is the best is that San and Ashitaka discover their true selves via their relationship and become comrades during a war.
San finds it difficult to trust others, which is understandable, yet Ashitaka is capable and kind enough to reach out to her. Even more, he offers her the dagger necklace, which is his final connection to his hometown. Additionally, it’s the knife he gave his former bride-elect in the past (and which she later returned to him when he had to leave home). For someone like San, a crystal dagger seems like the ideal wedding present or engagement symbol.
